NSW Premiere of HOLOFICTION at the Jewish International Film Festival 2026 in Australia
Jewish International Film Festival 2026
NSW Premiere
October 19 – November 25, 2026
Melbourne · Sydney · Perth
HOLOFICTION has been selected for the Jewish International Film Festival 2026 (JIFF) in Australia, which presents 52 Jewish-themed films from around the world in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Over the course of the festival, HOLOFICTION will be shown in 24 screenings in three cities – at the Classic Cinemas (Elsternwick) and Lido Cinemas (Hawthorn) in Melbourne, at the Ritz Cinemas (Randwick) and Roseville Cinemas in Sydney, and at Palace Raine Square in Perth.
The screenings in Sydney mark the NSW Premiere of HOLOFICTION, following its Australian Premiere at the 74th Melbourne International Film Festival earlier this year. At JIFF, the film is co-presented by the Goethe-Institut.
Each session will be preceded by a video introduction by Dr Simon Holloway of the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. On Monday, October 19, 2026 at 6:15 PM, Dr Holloway will introduce the screening at the Classic Cinemas in Elsternwick in person.
Film Description – JIFF 2026 Programme
“…a film about how we have learned to see history. It is a powerful work, a mirror held up to our collective memory.” – Art Magazine
“Constructed of clips from over 3,000 films and television shows produced between 1938 and the present, Holofiction is an astounding audiovisual collage exploring cultural representations of the Holocaust and how these have shaped and permeated our collective memory.
Taking Claude Lanzmann’s famous statement on the impossibility of Holocaust representation in fiction – “Fiction is a transgression. It is my belief that the depiction of certain things is prohibited” – as its point of departure, Polish-German filmmaker Michael Kosakowski’s cinematic supercut of reconstructs the chronology of the Holocaust through repeated motifs and narrative patterns.
Kosakowski’s hypnotic visual essayist approach invites audiences to query the ethics of depicting atrocities in fictional cinema, and to consider how the endless cinematic reproduction of certain representations shapes collective imaginations and historical memory.
Each session will be preceded by a video introduction from Dr Simon Holloway from the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.”
