Film Description – Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival 2026

“French filmmaker Claude Lanzmann famously criticized Schindler’s List, saying that “fiction is a transgression” and that “any representation of the Holocaust is prohibited.” In this monumental documentary, director Michal Kosakowski explores the tension between Lanzmann’s uncompromising vision and the thousands of fictional Holocaust films produced since 1938. By editing together scenes from more than 3,000 films into a captivating montage, without using narration, Kosakowski invites viewers to reflect on how movies shape our collective memory of unimaginable horrors.”

About the Festival

The Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival was founded in 1999 by Howard Elias (1958–2025). The first edition took place in May 2000 in the auditorium of the Jewish Community Centre; since then the festival, run by volunteers, has grown into an annual showcase of Jewish-themed cinema from around the world, regularly accompanied by filmmakers, Q&As and community events that connect the Jewish and the wider Hong Kong communities.

In 2026 the festival celebrates its 27th edition. It begins on November 5 with a special screening of To Be a Jew – Frank Lowy in His Own Words, followed by the Opening Night on November 7 with La Bonne Étoile (Lucky Star) at Emperor Cinemas Times Square, and runs until November 15, 2026.
