Austrian Premiere
November 5, 2026 – 6:30 PM
Museum Niederösterreich, St. Pölten (Austria)

On Thursday, November 5, 2026 – the very day HOLOFICTION opens in German cinemas – the Haus der Geschichte (House of History) at the Museum Niederösterreich in St. Pölten presents the Austrian premiere of the film as part of its event series „Erzählte Geschichte“ (Narrated History). The screening at 6:30 PM is followed by a panel discussion with director Michal Kosakowski and producer Uli Aigner, moderated by Christian Rapp. The audience is invited to put questions to the guests.

Beforehand, from 5:00 PM, the museum offers special opening hours and a curator-led tour of the exhibition „Kinder des Krieges – Aufwachsen zwischen 1938 und 1955“ (Children of War – Growing Up Between 1938 and 1955), which is included in the ticket. The evening closes with bread and wine.

HOLOFICTION was co-produced by Atelier Uli Aigner in Gaming, Lower Austria, and supported by Kulturland Niederösterreich.

About the Event – Museum Niederösterreich Programme Text

(English translation)

“The House of History at the Museum Niederösterreich presents the experimental documentary ‘Holofiction’ (2025) by Michal Kosakowski. His work brings together representations of the Holocaust from various fictional feature films and television productions in montages. The film draws on the imagery of more than 3,000 cinematic works and makes recurring narrative patterns visible. The result is a critical analysis of how specific images of the Holocaust have been depicted and reproduced over the last eight decades.
The screening is followed by a panel discussion with director Michal Kosakowski and producer Uli Aigner, moderated by Christian Rapp.”

The museum’s event page carries a slightly extended version of this text, adding that visitors will have the opportunity to put questions to the guests.

The Event Series „Erzählte Geschichte“

With its series „Erzählte Geschichte“ (Narrated History), the Haus der Geschichte presents itself not only as an exhibition but as a platform for dialogue and discussion, with conversations with contemporary witnesses at the heart of its approach to history. Past guests include resistance fighter Käthe Sasso, Holocaust survivor Marko Feingold, Schindler biographer Erika Rosenberg and the writers Peter Turrini and Martin Pollack.

Synopsis

(official synopsis)

“Drawing from an extensive archive of over 3,000 narrative works, ‘Holofiction’ critically examines how Holocaust imagery has been codified and reproduced in cinema across decades. The film exposes recurring visual motifs and narrative patterns that have become iconic in the portrayal of the Holocaust. Inspired by Claude Lanzmann’s scepticism toward visual representations of historical trauma, the film questions the possibility and implications of depicting such an atrocity in fictional cinema. Through its essayistic approach, ‘Holofiction’ invites audiences to reflect on the ethics and responsibility of cinematic storytelling, urging a deeper understanding of how these representations shape collective memory and historical perception.”
