HOLOFICTION at the 013 International Film Festival in Tilburg

October 21, 2026 – 7:00 PM
Cinecitta, Tilburg (Netherlands)

HOLOFICTION will be screened at the 8th 013 International Film Festival (013IFF) in Tilburg, the Netherlands, which takes place from October 20 to 25, 2026 at the art-house cinema Cinecitta. HOLOFICTION is presented in competition and was the third title announced for this year’s festival programme. The film will be shown in five screenings on three festival days: on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM in Cinema 1, and on Thursday, October 22, at 4:15 PM and Saturday, October 24, at 11:00 AM in two parallel screenings each – one with Dutch subtitles (Cinema 3) and one with English subtitles (Cinema 4).

Director Michal Kosakowski will travel to Tilburg for the screening on October 21. Afterwards, he will talk with Hugo Emmerzael, journalist at de Filmkrant, about the making of HOLOFICTION, the power of film images and the choices behind the essay film.

The 013 International Film Festival was held for the first time in 2019, with the support of the City of Tilburg. The “013” in the festival’s name refers to Tilburg’s telephone area code, which is also the city’s popular nickname throughout the Netherlands. All festival screenings take place at Cinecitta, a cinema building constructed in 1877 in the centre of Tilburg, which reopened in 2014 after an extensive refurbishment and is today one of the city’s central venues for art-house cinema. All festival films are eligible for the Audience Award for the most popular film, which is presented during the closing night.

About the Film – 013IFF Programme Text

(English version, as published on the 013IFF website)

“Our understanding of the Holocaust has been shaped to a large extent by the many fiction films made about it. The third title announced for 013IFF is Holofiction, a unique essay film composed of thousands of clips from these films. By re-editing this material into a new cinematic narrative, the film reveals recurring patterns in the way the Holocaust has been represented on screen. Holofiction explores how these images have evolved over time and how they continue to shape the way we remember and understand this history.

Holofiction had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it attracted considerable attention as a bold and innovative cinematic reflection. International film critics praised its inventive editing and the way it gives familiar images new meaning and resonance.

On Tuesday, 21 October, director Michal Kosakowski will travel to Tilburg for 013IFF. Following the screening, he will join Filmkrant journalist Hugo Emmerzael for an in-depth conversation about the making of Holofiction, the power of cinematic images, and the creative choices behind this remarkable essay film.”

Synopsis

(official synopsis)

“Drawing from an extensive archive of over 3,000 narrative works, ‘Holofiction’ critically examines how Holocaust imagery has been codified and reproduced in cinema across decades. The film exposes recurring visual motifs and narrative patterns that have become iconic in the portrayal of the Holocaust. Inspired by Claude Lanzmann’s scepticism toward visual representations of historical trauma, the film questions the possibility and implications of depicting such an atrocity in fictional cinema. Through its essayistic approach, ‘Holofiction’ invites audiences to reflect on the ethics and responsibility of cinematic storytelling, urging a deeper understanding of how these representations shape collective memory and historical perception.”
