HOLOFICTION
Text by Arkadij Khaet

An essayistic montage composed of thousands of film excerpts examines how cinema has represented and visually shaped the Shoah over decades — and raises questions about what these images can show, what they conceal, and how they have found their way into our collective memory.

Drawing from more than 3,000 feature and television films, Holofiction assembles a dense network of recurring images, motifs, and narrative patterns. Trains, faces, violence: what has inscribed itself into the collective memory over decades is made visible here — and at the same time called into question.

The film follows an essayistic approach and enters into a critical dialogue with the history of its own images — between iconization and cliché, remembrance and reproduction. Inspired by the skepticism articulated by Shoah director Claude Lanzmann regarding the representability of the Holocaust, Holofiction explores the possibilities and limits of fictional storytelling. The result is a work that is as striking as it is deliberately distanced, engaging with the images less emotionally than analytically — and precisely in this way opening up a space for reflection on the responsibility of images and the construction of historical memory.
